War and God’s Heart in the New Covenant: A Spiritual Perspective

In ancient times, under the Law, physical wars existed; however, the coming of the Messiah marked a radical paradigm shift. Jesus did not come to conquer territories through the sword, but to conquer hearts through sacrifice. For those called to be the "salt of the earth," Scripture provides a clear direction: God is the author of peace, not destruction.

1. The Mandate of Love: Beyond Self-Defense

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus raised the moral standard from "an eye for an eye" to a love that surpasses human logic. He eliminated the concept of an "enemy to be physically annihilated."

  • Matthew 5:44: "But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you."
  • The Argument: If God commands us to love our enemies, it is impossible for Him to simultaneously command us to kill them. War nullifies the ability to fulfill this supreme commandment.

2. The Nature of Our Battle: Spiritual Weapons, Not Iron

The Apostle Paul explains clearly that, in the New Covenant, the true conflict is not between nations or people, but in the spiritual realm. Physical warfare is, in essence, a diversion from the true struggle.

  • Ephesians 6:12: "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age..."
  • 2 Corinthians 10:4: "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds."
  • Conclusion: Whoever raises a weapon against their neighbor (flesh and blood) has lost sight of the real enemy: the devil.

3. The Spirit of Christ vs. The Spirit of Destruction

There is a revealing moment in the Gospel when the disciples, driven by misguided zeal, wanted to call down fire from heaven upon those who rejected them. Jesus’ response is the final verdict on religious or political violence:

  • Luke 9:55-56: "But He turned and rebuked them, and said, 'You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.'"
  • The Lesson: Any desire to destroy human lives, regardless of the cause, originates from a spirit other than the Spirit of Christ.

4. Victory Through Good: The Only Path to Triumph

The world believes that victory is obtained through force, but the New Covenant teaches us that violence only breeds more violence. The only way to stop the cycle of evil is through self-sacrifice and kindness.

  • Romans 12:21: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
  • Matthew 26:52: "But Jesus said to him, 'Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.'"

A Message for the Last Days

In Scripture, wars are described as signs of a fallen world under the influence of the evil one, not as instruments of God for the Church. The devil knows his time is short and uses hatred, extreme nationalism, and fear to drive humanity toward mutual slaughter.

The chosen ones are called to be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9), because they understand that every human life is precious in the eyes of the Creator. In the New Covenant, Jesus Christ came to bring life, and life in abundance—not death on a battlefield.

Final Note: War is the desperate cry of the carnal nature, while Peace is the whisper of the Holy Spirit in the heart of the one who truly understands the Cross.
